It is time. Winter is coming. Usually, that means, constant darkness, depressive emotions on repeat, wet socks from snow, and freezing hands. Even worse, Christmas time will soon be turned to max volume, meaning that you should start prepping now for the usual brainwash-sessions with Wham’s Last Christmas all over town – all over the world. In order for you to be ready and able to withstand this brainwashing, we have – at the SoA office – decided to find some hidden singer-songwriter gems from Aarhus. In our opinion, these tracks will actually be more suitable for the atmosphere of Christmas, freezing winter weather, and constant darkness. There are some brilliant singer-songwriters in our lovely town.
Nanna Schelde – ’Hello Hello’
Meet Nanna, the talented version of Ellie Goulding. In short, Nanna is a young girl hailing from Northern Jutland, currently living in Aarhus. She has previously visited Sofar Sound with her guitar, before they even started making sessions in Aarhus (see here). Moreover, she released her EP ‘A’ last year, where ‘Hello Hello’ is the first track. The EP received a four-star review from SoA.
Oliver Dengsø – ’Deep Lagoon’
Meet Oliver, a storyteller from Aarhus. Only hours ago, Oliver unveiled his latest single ‘Deep Lagoon’, featured above’, which shows exactly what he is capable of: creating a dark, haunting atmosphere, with Oliver’s voice and lyrics in the center of the universe, resulting in something uplifting.
Jonas Rasmussen – ’Winter Closed The Gate’
Meet Jonas, an Aarhus-based folk-pop artist. Previously, Jonas was performing under the moniker of Palsgaard, which we actually featured about a year ago. However, Jonas decided to continue under his full name, and hence, started writing new tracks with his best friend: his guitar. The result is a 4-track EP, recorded at Tapetown in Aarhus.
Sundays – ’ Avalanche’
Meet Sundays. Do I really have to introduce them? The band, founded by Magnus Jacobsen (Dance With Dirt), is already well known around town for their magnificent tracks and haunting live atmosphere, usually accompanied by sing-along from the audience. Previously, they performed at our RAW Music night at Sway and people loved it. We loved it. It is a must-see experience. Every time.

Rasmus Matthiesen – ’Østjylland’
Meet Rasmus, a musical storyteller utilizing the power of his mother tongue – the Danish language. What makes Rasmus really special is his ability to write compelling stories drawing on only small situations and inspirations. As a result, Rasmus has unveiled tracks on both major political debates, as well as on his hometown and a compartment on Danish trains.
Gurli Octavia – ’Everlasting’
Meet Gurli, a blooming singer from Aarhus. What really makes Gurli special is her old-school approach to music. She utilizes the beauty of simplicity, and the compelling about pure passion and talent. She is one of those artists, that sound exactly the same live and recorded – and that is not something one should underestimate the value of.
BUUR – ‘How Long’
Meet Buur, a five-piece based in Aarhus. They draw on a classical singer-songwriter style, but combine it with great and playful melodies. In sum, Buur are the Kings Of Convenience of Aarhus.
Calming River – ’Solemn Witness’
Meet Joshua, a British born singer working under the moniker of Calming River, based in Aarhus. What makes Joshua special is his ability to write, and lyrically reflect – and of course sing these words and lyrics in a way that draws you to be exactly where you are. To be sitting there, quietly, while your own thoughts begin to wander, as a result of Calming River’s universe.
