Welcome to this new column on Sound Of Aarhus. Inspired by our pals in Boston, this new column will be the place where we will fill you in on what is going on in the Aarhus music scene. It will be shorter, and wider than the usual articles on SOA and will be meant to give you the quick overview of the previous week’s music news.
In short, this is for the person, who may not have had the time to read the pieces we have published on SOA the last couple of days, and for the person who want the quick overview. We will highlight some of the news we find important, and also include some of the things we did not publish longer pieces about.
Velvet Volume Win 2 Awards at Bands Of Tomorrow Award 2015
Yesterday, the majority of the Danish population was watching Lighthouse X win the Danish selection, Dansk Melodi Grand Prix. Therefore, they will represent Denmark in Stockholm at Eurovision 2016. However, other more music and non-playback related things happened at Bands Of Tomorrow Music Awards 2015 in Copenhagen. Here, our very own local Velvet Volume won two awards, namely Rock Act of the Year, and Danish Act of the Year. Congratulations girls. Remember to go see the girls when they will perform at this year’s Northside Festival in town.
New Releases From CHINAH, The Gang OK, and Virgin Suicide
Do you want new music? Fortunately, this week has brought some great new releases from some of the most budding Danish bands. First of all, the electronic masterminds from Copenhagen-based CHINAH unveiled their debut EP ‘Once The Lights Are On’. A six-track release which has already brought them rave reviews from both domestic and foreign trendsetters. It brilliantly mixes the playfulness of instrumentalist Simon Andersson’s beats, with the raw sound of Simon Kjær’s guitar and fragileness of Fine Glinvad’s voice. Check it out on whatever streaming platform you prefer. Here is a link to them on Spotify.
Another release that deserves a mention is partly local outfit The Gang OK’s four-track EP ‘NOEMA’. We were more than honored to be able to premiere their lead single for ‘NOEMA‘ called ‘Shiny‘ last night. Then suddenly a couple of days later they unveiled their new four-track EP. With their new surprise release, they have decided to focus on shorter tracks spanning between three and five minutes, as opposed to the long tracks (15+ minutes) on their previous release Locations. Furthermore, ‘NOEMA’ is concentrated more on the golden balance, the mix, between lead singer Martin Bejder Jensen’s voice and the surrounding soundscape, creating more radio and stage-friendly tracks; moving The Gang OK from the end of the night to the middle of it instead. The results is a different sounding band, almost changing their genres from using heavy beats and techno sounds in the past, to a melting pot of pop, indie-electro and tight drum-beats on ‘NOEMA’. Indeed a sound suitable for the contemporary Danish music scene. Check out ‘NOEMA’ via Soundcloud here.
Finally, one of our favorite SOA bands, Virgin Suicide, unveiled a double single two days ago (Feb 12) called “Around the Sun / Arabs”. It has been almost a year since they released their first single, which clearly illustrates the pace of their musical career – they are moving up the musical latter fast, very fast. With these two new releases, the band has found a more electronic inspired sound, while still keeping their clear references to the 80s and that decade’s pop music. The keywords describing their style is still the same; Guitar riffs, tight drums, clap sounds, sunshine and alcoholic drinks. We absolutely love the sunny sound of their music, especially when it is so damn cold outside right now. Keep in mind that Virgin Suicide will visit Aarhus on February 25, when they will be performing at Atlas with support from EIRENE. Check out their double single (or two singles) on your preferred streaming platform. Here is a link to them on Spotify.
