It’s always hard for me to find something to watch at SPOT Festival, since they always have somewhere between one or two and absolutely no hip hop at all playing every year.
So I will be focusing this year on another genre I love – psychedelic rock. The first of the bands I will be recommending, however, come from hiphop.
Klub 27, named after the legendary age rock stars seem to die, consists of the producer Christian Guldborg Skotte (formerly known as Mighty One) and the singer and former rapper Haruna Wasajja James (formerly known as Peacefull James).
I had the pleasure of being live-DJ for Peacefull James for a period some years ago and he has undergone a great deal of change in his musical profile – including a switch to Danish and a name change to Negeren. Christian Guldborg Skotte has been quite rock inspired in the last couple of years and after working together on some rap-projects they made their first psych-rock track about a year ago. Haruna Wasajaa James has a different approach to singing that is reminiscent of late 60’s Danish bands with the spoken word combined with a rap-inspired flow while the productions is a modern version of Young Flowers and Velvet Underground, who especially seems to be a great inspiration for the band. Especially the drums are spot on in that regard.
Live they will be joined by three tremendously gifted musicians; Daniel Brandt, Maria Timm and Simon Rossen. However, since the band is so new, their concert at SPOT will be only their second ever. They are among the last 12 in DR’s Karrierekanonen, where Haruna Wasajja James has already been once when he was rapping as Peaceful James while Christian Guldborg Skotte was a producer for Haven Morgan who won the competition back in 2006. So even thought the concept and band is new we are dealing with two very competent and experienced gentlemen who might give another spark to a genre Spids Nøgenhat has helped revive lately.
Klub 27 will be playing Friday 16:05 at DOMEN
