YOUNOLOVEBUNNY is the beard for one Mr. Claus Frøhlich, a very prolific man from south Jutland, who’s impressive release-schedule over the years has been quite a heavy dose of bedroom garage and outsider pop – amassing something like 1,000 songs over various labels. This “self titled” E.P. however is apparently his first release recorded in a ‘proper’ recording studio, and out on ‘Raw Onion’ – an imprint run by Jacob Faurholt (Crystal Shipsss), another brother in arms in the lo-fi indie power-pop vein.
Just cruising through Frølich’s previous output up on Spotify, it’s clearly evident he’s highly prolific and talented. His music retaining streaks of true brilliance, in an outsider kind of way – much akin to the Elephant 6 collective (Of Montreal, Elf Power, Neutral Milk Hotel) and other such bedroom pop geniuses (Bob Pollard, Daniel Johnston). If you’re into d.i.y., you’re going to want to start following this cat. This new E.P. though, well, that’s something a little different. Different = good here, kids.
From opener (“Burst Of Light”) you can instantly notice that a full production and mastering job has greatly upped Younolovebunny’s potential for moving beyond an extremely niche corner, to a wider audience. All of the 5 tracks on this record are under 3:00 and extremely well crafted. There’s a sense of sugary cute-ness running through the power-pop melodies – however, they don’t over extend their welcome and broach into twee territory. Well, maybe a little, but I’m totally game for honestly twee pop.
Even though the record is the most produced offering Claus has out, don’t get me wrong, you can still tell it’s a little sloppy (sloppy = good sometimes) and definitely not played by hired studio zombies. I like that. If you thought Flaming Lips started sucking after Clouds Taste Metallic, this is your jam. I’m just glad there’s still great guys making imperfect pop for the disgruntled masses like this. I’m glad I got my hands on a special vinyl printing of this little release. This is one of the coolest releases on our radar this month for sure.
YOUNOLOVEBUNNY is out now on Raw Onion, and downloadable on Bandcamp
If you RUN to Route 66 in Copenhagen, you might be able to get a copy on vinyl.
