Official Release: 04.03.2016
This band has always been on our radar. For as long as I can remember doing SOA-related stuff, Who Is Louis has been poppin’ up over town and on various medias. I never really took notice, though. I do now.
This is not the first release from Who Is Louis. Back in 2013, they released a debut EP which opened doors. It also included support gigs for bands I wouldn’t compare them with today. They’ve changed by turning in to a trio, and they’ve changed by having found their sound. They’ve grown, I guess.
Now, the album holds 9 tracks, with a solid diversity – which isn’t a matter of course these days. The diversity (and style) is probably best described with three different inspirations; 1) You get a bit of Oh Land. Not the Oh Land you see on TV today, but Oh Land from a few albums back. The one we all like! 2) Lykke Li, naturally. 3) And hold on for this one, Fever Ray. Every now and then the album turns melancholic, atmospheric and Fever Ray-ish. In a really good way!
But this album is not a mixture of the above mentioned artists, it’s all Who Is Louis. And you know what, it’s not easy making ‘atmospheric synth-pop’ that people notice, these days. There’s just so many bands, and there’s a lot of youngsters that aren’t ready yet, but still act like they’ve got something to tell the world. It’s okay to find the right source of inspiration, as long as you still manage to make it your record, your sound.
Well, Greta and her companions, Bue Gundersen and Niels Münster, they are ready. They’ve managed to create a really impressive debut album, which works because you aren’t bored. Because the productions are both “playful” and dark. Because Greta Louis has the perfect synth-pop vocal, and lyrics that you actually want to hear. Because they’re talented. Sure, they aren’t all there yet – but I could easily imagine them going all the way. It might take a record or two, but for now, let’s settle with a great message:
It is okay to make pop music with real feelings – Thanks to Who Is Louis for reminding us.
Remember that you can catch Who Is Louis later this month when they’ll be supporting Fallulah at Voxhall on March 12 – Read More Here. Also, check out their new video for ‘Fancy Me’, taken from the new album – check it out here.
Who knows where these guys will be in a couple of years. I hope they will continue down this musical path, and I hope that this album will mean give them their domestic and international breakthrough. Either way, it is nice to finally hear pop music with real feelings again. We have not had that in a while! (4.5/6)
