The Silkeborg bred, but Aarhus based, Go Go Berlin goes to slightly darker places and back again with with one of the most well-produced albums I have heard this year. The album starts off with an introductory track, that gives us a taste of what the album is about. With hints of inspiration from traditional spythemes, as can be expected from a track called 006. Themes from this track can be heard through the album, which is a nice detail.
With a raw and noisy sound, extra depth from the organ and amazingly sounding drums, I think Go Go Berlin has reached a very cool place. Carried on by the playful vocals of Christian Vium, this album is a solid rock´n´roll album with hints of amongst others, Queens of the Stone Age and especially Arctic Monkeys’ “Do I Wanna Know?” on their leadsingle “Electric Lives”. Vium demonstrates some different ranges, e.g. with “All Mine” and proves himself a very capable singer.
The album consists both of cool and catchy songs like “Kids” but also more complex works like “Starlight / WDYW” which is a 10 minute long song, proving that Go Go Berlin wanted to go a bit further with this album. It´s a nice thing to see an indie band with a strong rock and roll game striving to reach higher place. Every song is filled with small details from either vocal harmonies, organ/synth, or some sweet guitar effects.
All in all the record is filled with everything from rock´n´roll ballads, feel-good tracks, to straight out groovy jam sessions. Though they have a darker soundscape, the energy in the tracks is still free spirited and enthusiastic, and there is a certain drive to it. It is a well-balanced album, and does not get either boring or tiring. In short it makes for a very nice listen.
