Surprisingly many had shown up this Sunday evening at Voxhall. A rather mixed audience, I think. Deafheaven had been described as somewhat of a black metal band, meaning that the loyal metal fans came out – and so did the shoegaze fans.
It wasn’t a black metal concert – and it wasn’t a shoegaze concert either, it was more of a post metal concert. The musicians in the band definitely had experience from the post rock world, and brought that with them in this band – and front man George Clarke single handedly brought the black metal part!
It was a rather short concert, but during the show Deafheaven proved, that they’re really, really good musicians. It was my first time seeing them live, actually, I’ve only known them for a short period. I really like their latest album ‘Sunbather’ – but didn’t really know how that would turn up live, since I’ve never really liked music where a so called singer just screams words (and I mean SCREAMS). And that’s what I didn’t like about this concert, because “singing” like that didn’t really fit the music. The metal fans never got exactly what they needed, and the “shoegaze” fans got annoyed by the singer. The band could definitely be at least just as big if they were instrumental only. Either way, that is what defines this band – and no matter what I say, I still had a really good time at their concert.
