The local, much loved local punk group, Yung are out with a new self-titled EP today. The release comes from Dutch label, Geertruida – a sort of collective guitar shop/house/label type thing that specializes in punk and other underground music.
Yung, of course, have been one of our favorites since their inception around 2013 – releasing (as a band) a 4-song EP of staggering quality and energy on local, Mastermind records. Their first full-length (2014s Falter) was also one of the best things to come out locally (in my humble opinion) for quite awhile – essentially waking up and re-invigorating the local punk/hardcore/post-punk scene. After another batch of Eps, singles and a full-length 2nd album (last year’s A Youthful Dream) and a re-print of Falter hitting the local shelves – the band are still going strong with buzzing guitars, pained vocals and the occasional mid-tempo foray.
The new Ep’s 3 songs are some of the finest that the band has put out as well. Seemingly drawing upon their earliest material – rough and sharp (“Irregular Fears”), dreamy and reflective (“Bitter”) and bittersweet and innocent (“Nostalgia”). With the new EP – they seem to have concentrated all their efforts on 3 really fine songs indeed – mixing together classic indie, punk, garage and even dashes of emo and folk in places.
Where unfortunately I personally thought “A Youthful Dream” might have meandered in spots – replacing some of the more bombastic material from early recordings in favor of exploring more plaintive territory – after having heard this new offering – I’m very excited to hear what they are planning for us next. If Yung’s past release schedule is anything to go by – you know we won’t have to wait too long for something new – these guys don’t mess around.
Orders are being taken through the label – Check here. However, a recent post from the band indicates that there have been delays from the pressing plant due to the heavy load from Record Store Day a few weeks ago – See photo below the video.
They begin a European tour tonight in Amsterdam nonetheless and we wish them all the best in taking some serious Aarhus music all over Europe this spring.
