They have been compared to The National, called the inheritors of Radiohead, and are probably one of the most underrated bands on the English indie rock scene. There’s a damn good chance that if you also like Editors then you’ll also love The Boxer Rebellion That said, there is still a small part of music fans who actually believe The Boxer Rebellion is a fake band, concocted by the 2010 romantic comedy Hollywood movie Going the Distance. Spoiler alert, they eventually end up playing a key role in the rekindling of the relationship between Drew Barrymore and Justin Long.
They’ve been around since 2001, where the band formed in London, comprising Englishmen Adam Harrison and Piers Hewitt, American Nathaniel Nicholson, and Australian Todd Howe. Since the beginning a few albums have been released, but their latest (and fourth) album Promises from 2013 really made reviewers jump around in joy. Virgin music announced that:
“it’s now questionable how much longer their status outside the limelight can last when they produce albums the quality of ‘Promises’. A vast-sounding affair, packed with tenderness and then gusto where it counts, its simply a mesmerising album.”
Their sound is deriving from a mixture of strident bass-heavy grooves and melodic alternative sounds. Combined with profound lyrics and lead-singer Nathaniel’s powerful yet fragile vocal, the band creates arena-sized rock music still with intensity and nerve. The band has undergone an interesting change from a dark textual and melodic universe to a more positive vibe on their fourth album from May last year. Right now they are touring around the world, and fortunately they will visit us in Aarhus this Friday. The Boxer Rebellion plays live the 28th of February at HeadQuarters. You can buy tickets now!
