About a month ago, I went to a One Night Fits All jam night at Fatter Eskil. I didn’t really know what to expect, but I was hoping for an evening where a lot of gifted musicians would show up, where the audience would be served with surprising takes on well known tracks, and where I’d be left with a feeling that I just had to figure out, what band that specific musician’s in – if he’s even in one.
I got all that, and a little extra; you see, it’s not everyone on stage at a jam night who makes the music better, that’s just how it is. That only means, that when the music isn’t all that good, you’ll still get a good laugh or a well deserved beer-break.
The next edition of One Night Fits All is coming up this Thursday, and they’re inviting you to become a part of it. This night, standing alongside house band and conductor Kristian Fogh, will be with Mark Dixon; a gifted singer who’s schooled at The Academy of Contemporary Music in London and has been singing with loads of the major Danish artists – and they want you to be on stage with them.
But it’s not just all about playing well known songs at One Night Fits All. They’re actually encouraging you to send some original material to be performed on stage. Read more at the event about how you can make that happen.
One of the main collaborators behind the project is DMF, and I asked Lars Kiehn, chairman at DMF in Aarhus, about the motives and meaning behind supporting this project:
It’s important for DMF to support this project and our collaboration with Fatter Eskil for many reasons. First of all, with this project, we support a private venue who, alongside the other of this cities private venues, have been struggling due to less funding compared to the regional venues. We, at DMF, see the private venues in these sizes as really important and necessary for our members. At the same time, we’re giving a lot of musicians, especially the young ones, an opportunity to play with some of the very best musicians in this country.
You won’t get a better backing band than with Kristian Fogh, Eddi Jarl, Kimmi Gulbæk, and Henrik Møller. We’re hoping, that the young musicians will get a boost in their work moral in order to reach these guys’ level. Also, we’re hoping that an event like this can improve the jam-form, which often seems to stagnate and can become less interesting. We’re re-shaping it, and trying to be as prepared as you possibly can, when dealing with jamming, where music should be interesting for both the listeners and the musicians playing.
If you aren’t able to make it this Thursday, the next one will be July 7th at the same venue, where none other than Christian Vium of Go Go Berlin will be featuring.
