Is summer over? Did it ever really start? I don’t know and don’t care really – I just wanted to get back to autumn – students head back to school, fantastic sweaters come out, venues re-open, and dark pop music fits the mood. We came across this track yesterday – and it just smacked me in the face like an icy leaf flying into your face as you cycle down langelandsgade towards the uni. It’s perilous and comforting at the same time.
ONBC of course is an abbreviation for ‘Oliver North Boy Choir’ – an indie band name if ever there was one. Oliver North, a good-looking military colonel in the 1980’s, spearheaded a clandestine military operation to sell weapons to Iran to fight the Lebanese who were holding American P.O.W.s in the early 80s. I guess the name “Iran Contra” was too brazen for a band from southern Denmark to brandish, but nonetheless, the music is right up my street.
“White Trash” Is classic indie. By classic indie – I mean a little dark, a little poppy, clean ‘two-finger’ guitar chords, reverb and not over-achieving anything. I’d go so far as to say that this is perfect. I get it. “You’re a little bit of everything…” is now stuck in my skull after the 5th listen – and you know what? I AM.
This is not ONBC’s first rodeo. They’ve been releasing EPs and singles on Crunchy Frog since ’07 – notably, their last release, 2012’s “Shadows” was a tight little electronic based pop number – you may remember the video – a cute little boy dressed as a vampire dancing around – it was the “aww” video of the year.
This time around the name is shortened, the nails a bit hardened, and the video plays background to the sparse but effective soundscape ONBC provide. Imagine post ‘Lust Lust Lust” The Raveonettes without Sune and early Smiths with girls singing. That’s what I’m thinking.
MTV has picked up on the group though and used their music in their “Scream” series (the only way you hear music on MTV now is behind talking) and in a trailer for upcoming Chris Evans film: Before We Go. I’m hoping we hear more like this from ONBC. Apparently there is a full-length album coming soon (actually their first!) so let’s show them some Aarhus love so they come here and play this song for me.
