“Standing in water up to their knees, three very unimportant little people were doing the best they could with an idea. And that’s about all they had. And I don’t know, maybe that night these three people were making history.” [Chinese Man – Get Up]
Okay, so they’re not Napoleon. But the Marseille-based DJ collective Chinese Man and their sound of what can probably best be described as Trip Hop will nevertheless conquer your hearts and ears in no time. Their 2012 album “Racing With the Sun” is a masterpiece of sample art (adorable side note: they still get most of their permission for usage personally from the artists). And while you might know their track “I’ve Got That Tune” from a Mercedes ad from some years ago, they are not as famous yet as they’d deserve to be.
Influenced by hip-hop, funk, dub, reggae and swing, Chinese Man’s sound differs greatly from your average French Gangster Hip Hop. They form sound collages from every sample they can find on vinyl – multilayered, fascinating, and always inventive.
It’s basically Girl Talk meets Parov Stelar meets a Kraftwerk-esque stage set up. Believe me, you want to be there when Chinese Man make history next Friday. And even if they don’t, you can be sure to get a highly entertaining evening out of it.
Chinese Man will play Train on October 25 at 21:30.
