In 2014 The Sound Of Aarhus team published our year-end lists of best albums – Jakob’s excellent “I Blow My Brains Out For You” was on my list. It was an authentic piece of retro-infused Greenwich Village type folk and cappuccino guzzling beatnik perfection. Now Mr. Bruno has changed it up a bit and put his hat in the ring of DR’s Karriere Kanonen competition with a new number: “Labyrinth-Like Mind”. We like it.
Normally I cringe at the competition-based music that is made to appeal to whoever decides what load of shit goes on the radio. We pay thousands of Kroner each year (or are forced to rather) for the crap that comes through our devices with little choice in the material chosen that we hear. Well – let’s go and change that and vote some decent frigging tune-age in. I could get behind this ditty for sure and to seal the deal, he’s an Aarhusian and we like to write about the good stuff from our city of smiles.
“Labyrinth-Like Mind’s” description on DR’s page pretty much nails it really: “Inspired by 60s psych-folk and 90s hip-hop beats”. Yup. This wouldn’t be out of place being played in a Manchester club in 1990 or on some obscure 60s psych compilation either. It’s a tight little catchy tune that builds and swirls, but never explodes and lets you down, leaving the listener coming back for more. Jakob has put aside the American folk vibe for a distinctly more European notion – kind of like Donovan jamming with the Happy Mondays. Consequently – if there are any mash-up Djs out there, I’d like to hear that please and thank you.
Follow the links to Bruno’s DR profile and give it a ‘spin’. I would love it if Jakob won the fucking thing and we heard music like this on the radio, I wouldn’t feel bad for paying our license.
Jakob Bruno is also a member of The April Rainers, whose debut LP is getting it’s finishing touches – a new solo single and video, “I Don’t Know Where The Time Goes” is out soon as well, and I know you can pick up his last LP in Route 66 for like 20dkk. It’s totally worth getting to know this guy’s music.
