Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1979 but raised in South Africa – of course we’re talking about Israeli-Romanian singer-songwriter Yoav. Did you know that his single “Adore Adore” featured in an episode of The Mentalist? Well now you know!
Since he released his critically acclaimed debut album Charmed and Strange in 2008, he has sold out headline shows in both Canada, U.S. and Europe. Actually it only took him one radio session in Denmark, then his debut album climbed to number one on our iTunes album chart within just 24 hours! Maybe you also remember him as the favorite of De Sorte Spejdere and Anders Lund Madsen who also invited him on stage in his talkshow Det Nye Talkshow.
Now he is back with his new album Blood Vine, we’ve had a talk with this world class talent before his concert at Voxhall on September 28th.
[chat question=”What has been your best musical experience?“]
As a member of the audience, I would say seeing Bjork at Radio City Music Hall with an orchestra, other amazing shows were Leonard Cohen at Coachella, Outkast, Ravi Shankar..so many. One of my favorite experiences was opening for Tori Amos at Madison Square Garden. That was cool.[/chat]
[chat question=”Do you have any special rituals before you go on stage we can hear about?“]
I do, but they are strange.. I do them in private. Its a mix of yoga and meditation and stretching and vocalizing and psyching myself up, calling in the musical spirits.. All top secret ;)[/chat]
[chat question=”What is the wildest place you’ve ever played and why?“]
I just played a festival last week at the far northern tip of Norway, but some of my concerts in deep Russia have been pretty wild. Experiences in that part of the world can be quite rock and roll indeed. Once I played at a private party on a runway in the VIP airport in Moscow. My backstage area was a huge private jet.[/chat]
[chat question=”What is the strangest requirement you’ve ever asked before a concert?“]
I’m quite reasonable with my requests. Usually some good vodka is enough to get me going. It’s a good idea to ask for socks and underwear at each venue (touring tip) because you don’t often have time to do laundry on tour.[/chat]
[chat question=”Which song was definitely the most difficult to write?“]
Wow, very few of them are easy. I would say Sign of Life on the new record was super tough. I had to work really hard and eventually had a “eureka” moment, where I realized it was meant to be a song made up of two distinct parts 1 and 2 that were totally different, rather than a typical verse/chorus /verse/chorus situation. Beautiful Lie also took years to get right.[/chat]
[chat question=”If there should be a future feature, who would you work with?“]
New producer called Clams Casino, Bjork, Andre 3000… the list goes on[/chat]
[chat question=”In addition to stage performances, what is the coolest thing about being a musician?“]
Making an amazing song in studio and then driving somewhere beautiful listening to it for the first time is rather enjoyable. I get to meet some amazing people all round the world and have had many mad adventures.[/chat]
[chat question=”Besides music, what do you spend your time doing?“]
A lot of my life during the year is geared towards touring, writing, reading, listening, playing, but I do try travel a bit as well over and above touring.. I spent some time in Tokyo and Thailand this year. At the end of each year I go back to Cape Town for summer and catch up on surfing. I’ve also practiced some martial arts for many years that makes me feel high..[/chat]
[chat question=”Which upcoming band has as you see it a great future up ahead?“]
Hard to say, as very few seem to make good second and third records. I have hopes for Alt-J..I think they could do it. Super talented and great live and really nice guys as well.[/chat]
[chat question=”Finally, What can people expect before your performance at Voxhall in Aarhus?“]
I will be playing a bunch of brand new tunes from my new record, Blood Vine, which obsessed my life over the last two years. I am using samples and such for some of the new songs, as they are much more textured than my older songs. I will of course also be playing the old favourites with my trusty guitar.[/chat]
