We had a talk with the talented dane! This Thursday Crystal Shipsss and Tjaere+Fjer stop by Radar.
Earlier this year I had the pleasure of stumbling across Crystal Shipsss and the teaser for the, at that time, forthcoming album ‘Dirty Dancer’. Instantly I wanted to hear more. The album was released late-September this year, and today I’ve heard the songs a thousand times, but Thursday I get to hear them performed live for the very first time. Excited? Can’t wait!
Behind Crystal Shipsss you find Jacob Faurholt. A nice Danish guy, currently living in Berlin. From there, Jacob is working hard to pursue his musical career, meanwhile keeping the originallity that his music possess. You know what, after you’ve read the interview below, stop by our review of ‘Dirty Dancer’! Find it here:
At the moment he’s on a mini-tour with fellow ‘Dane-in-Berlin’ Jens Christian Madsen, Tjaere+Fjer. They recently performed at REVERB in Zionskirche, Berlin, alongside Mono Girl, Ulige Numre and CTM, and are now back in DK to perform in Aarhus, Copenhagen and Odense, before travelling back to Berlin.
[chat question=”#Jacob, you’re back in DK to perform three concerts with Tjaere+Fjer. Excited?“]
Yes, I am looking forward to play the shows. Jens (Tjaer+Fjer) and I just finished the German part of this mini tour and we had a great time, So we are looking forward to continue our little journey in the home country.[/chat]
[chat question=”#Your latest album have been mentioned on several blogs around the world, but you might still be unknown to parts of the Aarhus audience. What can we expect from your Radar concert?“]
You can expect to hear songs from the Crystal Shipsss albums + EP, noise & melodies. [/chat]
[chat question=”#The album is titled ’Dirty Dancer’, can you explain that?“]
The title was there from the beginning and somehow I thought it would fit the concept of the album. I don’t remember exactly how I came up with it though.[/chat]
[chat question=”#’Dirty Dancer’ contains a lot of personal stories, very personal stories. They weren’t originally meant to be heard by the world, but you decided to release them after all – how come?“]
The thought of making an album that wasn’t meant for anybody to hear was what got me started, it was what gave me the idea of making an album with lyrics that are at times almost perversely direct. But I changed my mind early in the process – as I don’t really see the point in making an album only for myself. I am not very good at hiding things.[/chat]
[chat question=”#How does it feel to have these personal stories rotating in cyberspace? And how does it feel to perform them live, in front of an audience?“]
It feels good, I hope that people can relate in their own way.[/chat]
[chat question=”#Speaking of live, you’ve changed your set-up, and you’re the only one on stage now. Why did you decide to change that?“]
In the spring I had some good friends of mine in the band, William Kudahl Sørensen / Infants and Evelyn Malinowski / Experimental Housewife. Unfortunately they both moved from Berlin recently, so their movement was the natural end of the band formation. It was great fun to play with them – we were pretty noisy and heavy. For the “Dirty Dancer” live shows I wanted the set to be more atmospheric and intimate, so I did not try to get a new band together, as it actually made sense to do it on my own.[/chat]
[chat question=”#You and Jens Christian (Tjaere+Fjer) played three concerts in Germany before coming to DK – one of them at REVERB with several Danish bands. What did it feel like to share the stage with other Danish bands, in Berlin, where you’re living? And how did it go?“]
It was a great night. The people arranging REVERB did an incredible job. I don’t follow the Danish music scene closely, and didn’t know the other bands very well, so it was interesting to see them play. Performing in Zionskirche was pretty amazing. It is such a beautiful space. I cross my fingers that REVERB will take place again next year. [/chat]
[chat question=”#What does the future hold for Jacob Faurholt and Crystal Shipsss?“]
I hope to play as much as possible with this new Crystal Shipsss record. There is a bit of talk about a new tour in Spain next spring. The album was released in Spain and Portugal by the labels Acuarela and Mouca. I would also love to make another round of shows in Denmark. [/chat]
