We all know that mysterious guy from school, the entourage or from work, who comes on as a little bit reserved, only says something when it’s really important and who has that very quiet way of carrying himself. You never know what he is up to, or what he is going to say, but surely, whatever he is puzzling with, it is going to be special and noticed.
This is how I see Jesper Lidang after hearing the new single “Honeydream” from HÔN. You probably already know his high pitched and soft voice from The Rumour Said Fire, where he is flashing his talent on folky tunes. But with HÔN, he has put the folkyness on hold in favor of a more 80-ies pop kind of sound.
After listening to ”Honeydream” a couple of times, its fresh rythm and melody could not stop my mind from wandering to another artist called Sky Ferreira and her song ’Everything is Embarrasing’. Even though the tunes are quite different, it still seems that they are very alike in the overall expression. Someone might kill me for comparing ”Honeydream” with Sky Ferreira’s older single, but it feels right to link the two… in my ears at least.
Despite the fresh melody, the vocals have a calm, nostalgic feel to them that oozes of fragile memories of missing something or someone important to you. So by listening to this song, you can dive into to deep thoughts, without getting all lonely and sad, because of HÔN’s ability to mix nostalgia with a new 80’ies vibe.
Besides recording and singing the tunes on his own, Jesper Lidang has coorperated with Nis Bysted from Iceage, who has helped producing and mixing HÔN.
I am looking forward to seeing what this new Danish act will bring to the table next time – maybe he’ll surprise us all, and come up with something totally different. Hear his new single “Honeydream”, as well as his debut single “Silent Lover”, below.
