Have you every been stressed out by something, feeling almost as an isolated loner in social settings, balancing between happiness and insanity resembling the faces on the legendary drama masks symbolising comedy and tragedy? I have; Juju Bell has.
Today, on this grey Thursday, the Copenhagen-based artist Juju Bell unveils her new video for ‘Narrow Line’, which we are proud to exclusively premiere via SoundOfAarhus. Although Juju Bell is a Copenhagen-based act, Gerda Odgaard herself is actually born and raised in Struer in the western part of Jutland. The track is off her debut album ‘Brute or Bird’, which was released last year in November, and caught the attention of not only the blogosphere, but also Noisey and Gaffa. Together with video artist Maria Amtoft Mikkelsen, the two have joined forces to visually focus on the fine, narrow line between moods and feelings; between happiness and insanity.
With a fragile, feather-ish voice and an unpolished guitar, Juju Bell aka. Gerda Odgaard invites the viewers on a visual trip to the countryside and the total isolation – both physical and psychological. It’s simplistic and basic, yet drawing lines to a feeling, which most of us are familiar with – be it after a breakup, a stressful time during our studies, or the feeling of moving from your known environment to unknown waters. It’s dreamy, colourful, and unpolished in ways that make one wonder whether this is an insight view into the process of writing the wonderful lyrics to ‘Narrow Line’ or maybe the visual feeling of traveling over the bridge from Struer to Copenhagen as a native being alone with her guitar and fragile voice in new surroundings – we love it.
Currently, Juju Bell is working on her follow-up, second album and will be performing live at Manna Thursdays on October 12 in Copenhagen. At the moment, she does not have any forthcoming Aarhus gigs, so dear bookers; please invite Gerda back for a visit in her homelands.
