Released September 2nd, 27 year old Danish singer/songwriter Esben Kronborg discovers his melancholic side on the first single ‘Too Many Times’ off his upcoming EP ‘Boats Leak’. Clearly influenced by country music elements, Kronborg’s haunting voice suitably captures the coming-to-terms with a broken relationship, the song’s main theme.
The song’s use of real instruments, particularly the acoustic guitar, is a refreshing and welcome twist from the often synthesized mainstream tunes dominating the charts today. The song does however seem to ramble on aimlessly, thereby failing to reach its full potential. Despite Kronborg’s solid vocal range, the listener is left waiting for the song’s real hook – and keeps waiting.
It’s ironic when Kronborg sings “Guess it wouldn’t change a thing if I said I was sorry/’Cause she’s heard it all before”. As a listener, you cannot help but think that you actually did hear this tune somewhere before: Didn’t they play the song on the radio this morning? Or was it in that café you were in yesterday? – You’ve probably forgotten by now. Though clearly well-intentioned, the song idles along in the background and is unlikely to set the Danish charts alight.
