He’s one of the most important people in his genre, and now he visits Aarhus with his newest project – Mala in Cuba.
The last couple of years the dubstep scene has been growing tremendously, it is to be heard at every major Festival all over the world and some of the best acts are enjoying star-status. At last years Roskilde Festival you could find several major dubstep acts on the program, and the genre sort of had it’s own stage. But when talking about Mala, we can go back to when dubstep was still a smaller scene!
Back in the early ‘00s Mala began playing dubstep and spreading it from South London. At this time the scene was very little, and it was very difficult to get anywhere with your music. There were a tiny community of people playing it, but no one to receive it. However, these people were ready to give everything to spread the message of dubstep to the rest of the world.
To do this he formed the production outfit Digital Mystikz with his friend Coki and added Loefah and St pokes, and with them he also started the club night DMZ Night, the first club project to share dubstep on a wider scale. Since then, dubstep has gone from a small scene to being a worldwide thing and to be heard everywhere, with Mala as a frontfigure!
So far he’s done a lot of different things in his career, and as he’s been working as producer, DJ and label owner, it might have been time for a new project. Either way, back in 2011 Mala and DJ Gilles went to Cuba, last mentioned mainly to work on his project “Havana Cultura: The Search Continues”. Mala however, went to explore the Cuban sounds, and came back with a bagpack full of inspirational sounds. This led to the critically acclaimed album “Mala In Cuba”(2012) and a worldwide tour, and this Wednesday he visits Atlas!
