I was at a show a few weeks back and a friend of mine pushed me in front of an Englishman saying “here, talk to him – he makes alternative music!”. Normally, when this happens I have to end up listening to someone describe a long list of bands and sub-genres to get rid of them; “it’s like post-neo-folk, but imagine Television’s “Marquee Moon” if Nick Drake covered it with the Velvet Underground. What I’m trying to get at is – when I met Calming River (the nomme de plume of Joshua Malcolm) there wasn’t really any of that. The conversation gently lead to him saying something along the lines of “I was fed up at my day job so now I do this”. A week later a mutual friend of ours linked me with “Anniversary”.
And what is “this”? Anniversary is a plaintive alternative-folk piece – airy and reflective. The video features people doing things in godsbanen. There is something terribly hypnotic about it however. For lack of better words and as the artists name suggests – it’s calming. Delicate Spanish guitar over ambient feedback purvey Malcolm’s thin but expressive voice through what doesn’t at all feel like 6+ minutes of music. IF you like “alternative music” such as Sun Kil Moon, Jose Gonzales or Bon Iver, you’re attention is needed here.
Like many of our best artists – Calming River is not from here, but has for whatever (great) reason adopted Aarhus as his hometown. Welcome, and thanks for the sounds.
Anniversary is now out on all major streaming/downloading services. Check his facebook site for more news on upcoming music.
