This is the list of most interesting Hip Hop releases in 2015, according to Jesper Nyboe, in no particular order – enjoy!
Boone & Trepac – De Forkerte Spor
Trepac has been one of my favorite Danish rappers since M-Cnatet and I consider his first album one of the great new-classics. His second album was a bit of a letdown for me but damn did he make a comeback on his third album – a co-operative release with the producer/rapper Boone. The production is crazy, the delivery is on point and the lyrics honest and interesting.
Notable tracks include “Den Værre Halvdel”, “Ubalanceret” and “Over Kanten”. Plus “Kurwa” is one of the sickest instrumental in years!
Also make sure you check out the remix version called “De Forkerte Remixes” , where especially Swab reinterprets his track to perfection.
Manus Nigra – Blind Vej
One (positive) dilemma this year is that I have been involved in several of my personal favorite releases. Perhaps at the top of my list is Manus Nigra – Blind Vej. Manus Nigra is a trip hop / neo-soul / hip hop group consisting of the producer Swab, the rapper Ham Den Lange and the singer Fönix. They managed to make a new sound, that haven’t been heard before in Danish. A combination of ’94 Bristol Portishead, The Ummah and boom bap hip hop. Also the vinyl was a very funky green marbled color and the artwork dope.
My personal favorites here are “Dukke”, “Bag Dig” and “Slut”.
M.W.P. – New Horizon
M.W.P. is one of the more unknown quantities in Danish hip hop. He has been producing for quite a while and releasing a ton of material. Now he has finally gotten his first official release out. A producer album with too many American rappers featuring to mention. An impressive feat and the album is fire!
Notables include “Don’t Try To Front” feat. Skyzoo, ILL Conscious, SmooVth & DJ Grazzhoppa, “Monarchs” feat. ILL Conscious, Reks, Guilty Simpson & DJ Grazzhoppa and “The Genetics” feat. ILL Conscious & DJ Modesty.
Schmugs – Quit Talkin’
Context and ScratchMagic makes up this new group, who started a crowdfunding campaign (https://www.booomerang.dk/projects/schmugs/) to fund the release of their new album on vinyl earlier this year. It was luckily successful and the whole world got to hear this fantastic album. Boom bap with dope samples, cuts and delivery. Everything you could ask for. A must hear!
Check out “Bananas Split”, “True/False” and “Stoopid”.
Fede Poul – I Centeret
Fede Poul is the alter ego of the legendary Danish rapper Khalern (Khal Allan) and this June “Fede Poul I Centeret” was released on 150 cassette tapes with a variety of guest and a unique lo-fi sound – even on the MP3’s. The guest list is quite long, but one of the biggest surprises was the ever so inactive Tegnedrengen. If you haven’t already heard the tape – just do it!
If you don’t know where to start go with “Lars Von Trier”, “Max Von Sydow” or “Fed Rapmusik”.
Kejser A – Færdig
Once again an LP released on my own label, but that doesn’t disqualify it. The hype alone has been amazing. People calling it one of the best Danish hip hop released in several years and “Lukas” one of the greatest storytelling tracks ever.
It’s only available on vinyl (which is sold out) and not digitally. So if you didn’t get it, go find someone who did and listen to it.
Just listen to “Lukas”! “Du Fortryder Det” and “2011” is my other two favorites.
Various Artists – Spytbakken 6
“Spytbakken” was originally a CD-only compilation series by Copenhagen label “Echo Out”. After being of the grid for a couple of years it has now returned on vinyl (and digitally) with perhaps the best in the series, vol. 6.
Most notable are marki snøre – “Mood Killah”, Trepac & Supardejen – “Ægte Genkender Ægte” and Illusionisten & Mund De Carlo – Røde Øjne.
Sphaeren – Indviet / Supardejen – Retrorik
It’s been a long time since Sphaeren (Supardejen, Stik Op Jakob & Mugge V) released their last album. Both rappers have been keeping themselves busy with other projects, but back and reunited they deliver an album that will not disappoint if you are a fan of their work. This time around the beats have been delivered by other Danish producers such as DJ Noize, KVBeats, Architech and Dr. Phill (usually Supardejen does the bulk of the production).
Go for the reminiscent “Dansk Rap”, “Skyggespil” or “Det’ En Jungle”.
Also worth mentioning is Supardejens solo album “Retrorik” with production by DJ Noize, Tue Track and Supardejen himself.
Check out “Skrid” feat. Trepac, “Æg & Bacon” feat. Khal Allan & Machacha and “Stjernekrig” feat. Kenneth Kold.
Mund De Carlo – Ordene Først
Mund De Carlo is a very gifted rapper, although I sometimes feel that form supersedes content a lot of time. The production on this album is so dope (Arhchitech, Boone and The Yeah) and the flow is just so on point.
You should check out “Flyver” right now and then go check out “Stik Den” and “Gaden”.
Antik – Mesterværk
This has been a year of the producer albums. And this is sort of a weird one. To me it’s what I would call a “half ‘n’ half” and on this one the good half is really really good. The features are massive, but to name a few Loke Deph, Trepac, Dr. Phill, Timur, marki snøre, Khalern, Pede Gøbb, Supardejen, Nota Bene and Particle Man all deliver.
Notable tracks are Khalern – “Grill”, Dr. Phill – “Planeten Bryder Sammen” and Loke Deph, Trepac & Pede Gøbb – “Ammoniak”.
Other notable releases in 2015 aka Honorable Mentions:
11 tracks, not on any releases, you should check out from 2015:
One of my absolute favorites of 2015! Boom Bap the way I like it and serious, relatable and personal lyrics.
The same can be said about this tracks from Aarhus native Eye N’ Eye. He has been lurking and working in the underground for about five years and his debut-release should be out in 2016. Here’s the first single.
This is just mood. Lyrics, beat, delivery. A demo-track, but still extremely dope!
A discarded track but still freakin’ dope!
Danish producer Architech has produced this bangin’ track for the British rapper Blackk Chronical and it has been on my playlist ever since!
Local (and international) Pro Era member and producer HansSOLO is working on a new project with the American rapper Sincere. If it turns out to be more of this, then it will be very dope!
A terribly important input to the Danish debate about the refugee crisis over a great beat by Architech.
Particle Man to me is the best English speaking rapper in Denmark and he is proving why on this dope track produced by exile Aarhusian The Yeah.
Sanganee is a young rapper who is still in development. But although not everything is on the highest level skillwise on this track it is still very dope. And that beat, yo!
I just love hardcore rap. More or less the only ones doing it in Denmark and it’s dope!
Not to be confused with the producer, Hahn Solo, now also residing in Aarhus, is delivering dope bars over a low key boom bap production by Perzon.
