Last year in September we featured the talented local ANKAH. We even went as far as to call her ‘soul princess’ and describe her as the Aarhus equivalent of Amy Winehouse. While moving mainly under the radar, this talented girl has been support for one of the most blooming artists coming out of the Netherlands – Bo Saris. An artist who reached buzz on the blogosphere with his hitsingle “She’s on Fire” and oh boy he was right. I presume he was singing about local Aarhus-based ANKAH.
On February 26 she won “Best Newcomer 2014” at the Scandinavian Soul Music Awards in Stockholm. After all it seems like this girl is not messing around. She has set sail for the ivy league of soul music. We had a chat with her in connection with her new title as ‘award-winner’.
How does it feel to be nominated in a major contest like SSMA?
”When I discovered that I was nominated as ’Best Newcomer’ I could not believe it. The nomination itself was a huge tribute from the jury, but to receive it was an even greater acknowledgement. I could clearly see that the artists, who were nominated in the same category as me, were a lot more established in the music world than I was at the time. Therefore I did not in my wildest dreams think that I would end up standing on top as the winner in the category.
This is really a big thing for me, to win such an award, but also to win it so early in my career is really a huge boost – it push me forward. It is highly motivating to know that so many people believe in me and it gives me just the will to work even harder with my music in the future. Furthermore it means a lot to see that it is actually possible to get recognication in the genre I love so much, and that there are others here in the cold north that cultivate soul music as I do.”
Speaking of soul music. Usually young talents aren’t thinking of soul as the genre to start working with. How did you end up working with Soul music?
”The reason why I have chosen to work within soul-music and write in the genre is simply down to the fact that it feels natural to me. I have always listened a lot to soul, hiphop and RnB and my big musical role models are also moving within these genres. Therefore it has not really been a conscious choice, but more the obvious choice for me.”
Last but not least. Can you reveal anything about the future for the ANKAH moniker?
”I am currently in the process of writing new songs for my first official release due this spring. I work with four insanely cool boys that I will spend studio-time with in April. I am really looking forward to show the world all that we are doing and cannot wait to show what we have been working on. I have a feeling it will be a great summer with many concerts and exciting new experiences with music involved. At least I will do everything I can to live up the expectations now that I’m official Best Newcomer!”
