He seemed a little shy and his eyes roamed over the silent crowd, when Asgeir went on stage at ARoS Saturday night.
“Thank you,” he mumbled silently in the microphone when the crowd welcomed him with a hearty applause. Through the whole concert there was an electrifying energy between stage and floor so intense that you could charge batteries with it.
It was supposed to be held at the rooftop in the middle of the rainbow panorama but was moved inside due to bad weather. But maybe that was actually a blessing in disguise. The acoustics in the big, almost empty room were amazing, and it gave the whole concert a sacred sound to it – which is was indeed.
Besides Dreaming, Heart Shaped Box, Summer Guest and the opening act Head in the Snow, he sang in Icelandic which was a good choice. Asgeir has an authentic and naïve sound to his music, an authenticity he looses, when his music is translated.
But Asgeirs special gift is his voice; distinctively keening and layered with harmonies. It is so mesmerizing that it makes whatever he’s singing about and in what language seem indifferent.
Something magical definitely happened at ARoS this weekend and we can’t wait to welcome Asgeir to Aarhus again in the near future.
