Welcome to this first installment of The Catch Up.
The Catch Up will be a monthly catch up of what I find interesting of Danish music in that period – mainly hip hop – and some of the event to look forward to in the coming month. So let’s begin. For this first one I will go a bit further back than one month so there will be a good amount to get you going.
First of, we will start with the local Aarhus producer Hans Solo, who is also part of the Pro Era Crew (Joey Bada$$, CJ Fly, Capital Steez, Dessy Hinds and more), and the instrumental track “Abundance” which already has over 90.000 plays on Soundcloud. It has a good vibe, but I’m not that into the breakdown at the end though.
From one Hans Solo production to another; Local rapper Julaw has switched his language and is now known as erik (no capital E for some reason). The production is nice and the lyrics are pretty good. I really don’t like the chorus though, but from what I have heard live this seems to be the weakest track on the upcoming EP, that also features the American rap group Cunninlynguists.
We’ll keep it in Aarhus with the local newcomers Liud, who has just been recommended by Danish Radio’s Karrierekanonen. A chill out vibe about how life should be simple, but that it’s hard to figure out and learn. The first single from their upcoming EP “Langt Ude”.
Fede Poul is a pseudonym for a legendary rapper/producer from Aarhus. He just made a cassette tape called “I Centeret” with a lot of his friends as features. Each song is named after a celebrity and it is well working lo-fi hip hop with some humor attached to it. You can download the whole thing for free or listen to it on Soundcloud.
Another local producer WhoGotDrumz, who is also known as the writer of the blog Alle Mine Vinyler, has made this amazing beat that I can’t stop playing all the time. It’s called “Space In Time” and is both really banging and filled with creative and well timed samples. It’s reminiscent of the mid-nineties “DJ-producers” who just laced samples, eg. DJ Shadow.
Particle Man, straight outta Silkeborg, is working on an EP with the two Aarhus producers FMD and Zade One. “2+2” is I guess an outtake/remix produced by FMD. But who cares as long as it is dope. To me there is no doubt that Particle Man is the best Danish rapper in English. His lyrics are on point and his delivery second to none. We also get to hear FMD prove why he is among the best scratch-DJ’s in Denmark.
We’ll keep it in Aarhus production wise with Hahn Solo (not to be confused with Hans Solo) produced by Perzon. A nice dusty underground groove that was picked as the demo of the week by the Run For Cover podcast. They are said to be working on an EP together.
With “Yde For At Nyde” we’ll take it up north to Aalborg. The track is from Bulut Loc’s new EP “Lowkey Lounge 2015” and the only track I really like on there. It features Intensiv MC and sounds a lot like their previous work with DJ Eazy. This time however it is produced by WhatItIs.
Emil Kruse aka Aesthetic is a former grime rapper who luckily found his sense and started making dope 90’s hip hop instead. “Anerkend” is a throwaway track from his upcoming album. And it’s really dope!
While we’re at 90’s hip hop, Zig Urt, who makes his beats on an Akai MPC2000, has just released a free sample based instrumental album that you should check out. My favorite track is the title track “All Ears” with a nice piano drive and echoing brass.
Speaking of samples, Lord Loopitah – again a pseudonym for a well known rapper/producer – has made a mixtape of different tracks from his vinyl collection and it is fucking awesome. A nice selection.
Kaput (Кдрцт) is a rap group consisting of the rappers Loke Deph and Esben and the rapper/producer Boone (sometimes Boonekamf). The voice sample for the chorus works really well along with the evocative production. The rap is as usual pretty on point.
Last but not least we have the 22 year old rapper/producer Atmos Cruch featuring AkaPelle. The slow depressing groove and insisting bass sets the mood for their hangover styled indolent rap.
After several years of rappers more or less avoiding Aarhus (even the Danish rappers don’t come here on their tours) it seems that they are coming back this fall.
First of all we have Xzibit ,Jedi Mind Tricks, Machine Gun Kelly, Gramatik and Kasper Spez at Voxhall/Atlas plus Talib Kweli and Kid Ink (even though I think he is wack he is a big name) at Train. We even have Pede B & DJ Noize at Studenterhus Aarhus. It’s nowhere close to Copenhagen but much more than usual.
We also have some minor interesting event such as HipHop & Burgers once again with a nice line up of Hans Solo x Eye’N’Eye x Blacc El – Liud – Ali K – Freddy – Eddy – Bror and more October 2nd at Godsbanen. Plus, you know, burgers!
Also Lassemand from Mejeriet is releasing his new EP “Voksenmandsrap” at Gyngen September 19th.
That is it for this time. See you next month.
