Another month another catch up – the first in 2016. If you haven’t been following this serie, you can catch the catch up of 2015 right here.
It’s a new year and here’s what I think any fan of hip hop should check out from the Danish rap scene this month.
First, we’ll start with a few international artists with Danish productions. The first of whom is Aarhus’ very own Pro.Era member HansSOLO, who has teamed up with Brooklyn’s very own Flo Kennedy – who’s album will be lacing with beats. It’s skills over skills and has already been endorsed by the likes of The Source and Team Backpack for those who know their hip hop.
The British rapper Tesla’s Ghost is out with a new track produced by the very active and consistent Danish beat maker Architech. This is not the first time they have worked together. Once again, it’s a very grimy track with a street video. Dope shit.
While we are at the aforementioned very productive producer Architech, he has also released this nice EP with the producer/rapper Chen rapping over his beats and featuring the likes of Topskud, EMIL, Svend Spyt and Blodsport.
And once more, an Architech production – Ham Den Lange reporting live from the Greek Island of Leros where he is doing charity work at a refugee camp. The song is about the lives of the refugees and his diary from the camp. It’s has already been watched more than 480.000 times on Facebook. “Endnu en båd fra Farmakosi”
The ever so nerd-ish Supardejen has put out the original version of his Star Wars track “Stjernekrig”, produced only with sounds from the original movie trilogy. The track was updated to fit the sound on his album “Retrorik”. Very inventive and also featuring the legendary Danish rapper Kenneth Kold for the first time in about 10 years.
Dr. Phill has also teamed up with Supardejen, delivering a beat for the track “Gammel Rotte”. Word play and hard delivery at its finest.
For about a year and a half, Strudsigallop has been gaining hype on Soundcloud and with his featuring on Fede Pouls cassette tape “I Centeret”. Here he is with his first music video to the low key track “KURT RAVN”.
The producer BergBitter has teamed up with Callas, marki snøre, Mads (Liud), Lille Y and Aalen for a three-track Soundcloud exclusive. Some of Aarhus’ finest and once again Aalen showing that he should be rapping more often, he has the voice and lyrics.
Trepac – one of my favorite Danish rappers – has delivered this dope alliteration track produced by Xeren with cuts by Def Star Audio Emperor. Fantastic delivery!
Yet an Echo Out member – and another one to my list of favorite rappers – Nota Bene is moving on in his new music video to a Mathias Dahlstrøm production.
Mund de Carlo is showing his rap skills on “Rap Godt” over a simple Hanak & Genius beat. 6 minutes of straight rapping.
Eye N’ Eye is working on his own EP that should be out soon – the first single has already been featured in the Catch Up series. He is apparently also working on a collab with the Aarhus producer MagieNoir aka Jonas Cook.
Xanadu Sound is a crew consisting of the two rappers Particle Man and Blacc El, the producer The Yeah and the singer Mally. They have just put out a mixtape. It varies a great deal in quality, but check up for tracks like “Contact” and “Little Mud”, “Sonday Morning”.
Rasmus Modsat has released a four track EP called “Uden Pis”. (https://rasmusmodsat.bandcamp.com) Scheme-build rap over Davey and PsoriaKriz productions. There’s also the video for the track “Maskinen”.
Last but not least we have the Aarhus based hardcore rapper Z-E-B with a random track featuring cuts from DJ FMD.
On the live front, only The Game has visited. Only this time it apparently wasn’t as extremely wack as it has been the last few times, so fuck me for not going.
There will be a Danish rap jam with Trepac, Pede Gøbb, Asbestose, MC Meller and a few local rappers on February 13th and there should be another jam with both local and national rappers in March, however no confirmation has yet arrived.
Kasper Spez will visit Radar the 12th of March. You can read the review of his latest concert in Aarhus here. And that’s it! The closest thing to another hip hop act in Aarhus is Twista on Train. Even Pede B, who has local management and booking, is not coming to Aarhus on his 7 city tour of Denmark. I think that says it all.
Aarhus – get it together goddammit!
