At Northside this year, I gave myself the challenge of reviewing something that I have never heard before and that lucky someone was going to be Puscifer. I am familiar with Maynard James Keenan and both Tool and A Perfect Circle. I even saw Tool at Roskilde in 2006 and consider it one of my best concert experiences ever. Therefore, it was only fitting that I would go and check out his new(er) group Puscifer.
Once I get to the stage it is quite obvious that this would be no regular show. In the middle of the stage is a freaking wrestling ring. Considering the fact that I am a huge wrestling fan (WWF/WCW not WWE!) this caught my attention. Once the band came on stage it became even clearer that this would be special. A giant screen in the back with visuals and five Lucha Libre wrestlers along with the band – with Keenan wearing a mask (while having a Mohawk and wearing giant glasses underneath).
Since I know none of their songs I wouldn’t be able to tell what they were playing but I can tell you that they were fucking amazing. Everyone was really tight as a drum and there is nothing I can put a finger on technically. Wow… just wow. It blew me away. Add one of the most incredible live performance and one of the most amazing shows I have ever seen on a stage. It wasn’t just people dressed up as wrestlers – it was two women and two men actually wrestling in the ring and a fifth one sticking his tongue out and getting thrown around. All divided into three acts accompanied often by striking visuals and antics from both Keenan and Carina Round.
Usually, I don’t really give the slightest about stage shows – it’s the music that’s the important thing for me. This, however, is one of those few times where putting on a spectacular show actually makes sense. Also, they were just playing the shit out of everything, so it didn’t take anything away from the music. Puscifer is probably not something I’m ever gonna put on and just listen to, but live – damn – that’s one hell of a show!
It doesn't really matter whether you like it or not, this show is something else. (6/6)
